Music and Performing Arts

At Queensbridge we want all of our children to realise their potential

At Queensbridge, we believe it is important to nurture music making from an early age. Music enriches the curriculum for our students and is a joyful discipline. It is also known to boost confidence and self-esteem, stimulate brain activity and improve fine motor skills, and singing improves language skills.

All classes have weekly music lessons based around performing, composing, transcribing and describing music. Wherever possible, music lessons support the topic that is being taught in class and are delivered by specialist teachers. In Year 3, all children learn an instrument in class – currently tuned percussion (xylophones, glockenspiels and metallophones). Children who play instruments are encouraged to use them in class when composing or performing. Children in Early Years experiment with instruments, exploring the different sounds they make. Our reception classes take part in the Hackney Singing festival, along with all of Year 2 and Year 5. All children take part in a weekly singing assembly with their peers. We believe that shared singing builds a sense of community and improves well-being.

In Key Stage 2, we also currently provide lessons for a wide range of instruments including guitar, saxophone, flute, clarinet, cello, violin and brass (trombone and trumpet). The school also has an amazing orchestra, two fantastic choirs and even a rock band that perform at school events and at community events, such as The Round Chapel Hackney Music Festival. These extra-curricular groups enable children to practise and master the skills they are learning in class and outside of school.

We run exciting workshops to accompany school topics and events with visiting musicians and artists. All children perform high quality Christmas shows with the Year 6 children taking the lead parts and devising their own leaver performance at the end of the year. Our choirs have performed at The Royal Albert Hall, The Barbican and The Tower of London as well as other local venues. We have regular visits from The Worshipful Company of Musicians and workshops in African drumming and Bollywood dancing.

We have creative partnerships with a range of major arts organisations including:

  • National Theatre, Barbican
  • Classical Road Show
  • Apollo Orchestra
  • Voces 8
  • London Symphony Orchestra
  • Young Shakespeare Company
  • Arcola Theatre
  • Face Britain
  • Trinity College

Our choir has sung with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, City of London Choir, The Prince’s Trust Christmas Charity Carol Concert, Greenwich Theatre and English Chamber Opera.  Classes also regularly take part in music festivals and concerts across London and the South East.
