Design and Technology workshop
We propose converting the former Nursery Building into a fully equipped Makerspace and Design & Technology workshop—a flexible, creative hub for extended art, design, and making projects that traditional classrooms can’t accommodate.
The space will feature eight workbenches, wet-work facilities, and ample storage, supporting up to 10 sessions per week including after-school clubs.
Designed primarily for KS2 pupils, with 90-minute weekly lessons, the curriculum will focus on design and build, product design, and event or exhibition-based projects lasting 10–12 weeks. Each project will be fully resourced and supported with CPD for staff, ensuring high-quality delivery and sustainable impact.
This dedicated space will empower children to develop critical thinking, creativity, and confidence through hands-on learning that aligns with the school’s broader vision and curriculum.
The internal fit-out of the Makerspace will include durable, versatile specialist tables and stools, equipped with protective covers for tool use and wet-work. Adequate storage will be installed for tools, materials, and ongoing projects, alongside a water supply with one or two sinks for cleaning. A new fire risk assessment will be required due to the change in use, likely necessitating added smoke/heat detectors, fire call points, emergency circuit isolators for fixed machinery, and possibly magnetic locks for external doors. While lighting and heating are already functional, additional power sockets will be needed, along with minor works such as boxing in pipes and wires, removing the wood/glass room, and installing a new classroom door.
