Autistic Resource Provision Curriculum
Our Autistic Resource Provision (ARP) has a broad, balanced, and meaningful curriculum that meets the individual needs of the children.
Our approach is flexible and responsive, combining specialist strategies with the wider school curriculum. Alongside teaching core subjects from the mainstream curriculum, we also focus on developing communication, social interaction, emotional regulation, and independence, with our pupil’s strengths and interests at the core of our planning.
Core learning
Depending on the age and stage of our pupils, we either adapt the Early years curriculum or the Year 1 curriculum ( Please see our home page/Curriculum)
Integrated Specialist Strategies
Working with the Speech and Language therapist (2 days a week), we incorporate Speech and Language strategies within the planning and delivery of the curriculum. The team learns Speech and Language interventions and continues to deliver them throughout the week in the absence of the therapist.
Key strategies and interventions used:
● SCERTS
● Lego therapy
Mainstream integration
Through careful consideration with mainstream teachers, we design an integration timetable that suits the needs and interests of the child, and support teachers to adapt the learning appropriately.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
SCERT’s is a research-based educational model with a focus on the development of pupil’s Social Communication and Emotional Regulation. It helps us consider how to set up the environment and provide Transactional Supports for their development.
We are now using SCERTS to guide our curriculum planning and daily practice, ensuring that every child’s learning is meaningful, engaging and personalised. This approach helps us:
● Foster functional communication skills tailored to each child’s needs
● Support children in developing strategies for emotional regulation and resilience
● Create inclusive environments through collaborative support from staff, peers, and families
SCERTS is not a standalone programme but a flexible framework that will integrate with our life skills curriculum, academic learning, and therapeutic interventions. It allows us to set goals that are developmentally appropriate and aligned with each child’s Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
Life skills curriculum - here
Additionally, Our Life Skills Curriculum is designed to empower the children with the practical tools they need to thrive in everyday life. We teach life skills discretely, and embed them within the school day, readying the children for life within and outside of school. This curriculum is a key part of our commitment to nurturing the whole child beyond the classroom. As part of this, we also have a weekly community visit, focussing on travel training, social skills out in the community, and personal safety.
Zones of regulation - here
We use the Zones of Regulation across our Autism Resource Provision to help children understand and manage their emotions, develop self-regulation strategies, and build the foundations for positive behaviour and wellbeing. We both teach discrete zones of regulation lessons, and embed it in the environment and school day.
Music therapy - here
We are delighted to now have a qualified music therapist as part of our Autism Resource Provision team. Music therapy is a powerful tool to support sensory integration, social interaction, and emotional wellbeing. Our Music therapist additionally does a music group weekly that the children love. It is through observations, assessment and collaboration with families, therapists, and teaching staff that we tailor the curriculum to support each pupil’s unique journey
